Martin Kushner
So here I am in Edison, NJ, teaching English Comp at Middlesex County College. I also teach at the New Brunswick Center and have taught in Perth Amboy as well.
Yesterday, I learned that Ernest Albrecht had died at the age of 78. Is that name familiar to some of you? Ernie directed plays in Roosevelt Park outdoors and also in local community theatre. He taught later at Middlesex County College here in Edison. Do the names Hank Glass, Marion Glass, and of course, Bert Katz, ring a bell?
Bert Katz taught English and Drama at WHS and was the teacher who had an enormous influence on my life. I'm back doing theatre in New York again, and tomorrow evening, I play a mean Italian father and philandering husband in a play by Luigi Capuano, a wonderful playwright from the boot of Italy. We're doing a staged reading of it at the Italian-American Museum in Little Italy, Manhattan. If you happen to be free, you can be my guest - just email me that you're coming; there's no admission, just contribute a few bucks to the Museum at the door. The play's just one act - students and faculty from Middlesex County College are in it; after, we'll go to Sal's Restaurant, a Little Italy institution serving inexpensive pasta, soups, pizzas, and sandwiches. The reading starts at 6:30 and will be over by 7:30; then we chat about the play, and then go eat!! (Oh, it's in English, translated from the Italian by my English Dept. colleague, Santi Buscemi.
Later this season, I'll be directing a play in New York - dates and venue to be announced.
Susan Friedman and I (Susan is Judy Coyle's sister, class of 64) celebrated our 21st year together this fall. Judy is married to Henry Kutakoff, class of '61; they recently celebrated 50 years of marriage. I introduced them!!
And Terry Collins got a two-year extension on his contract. We didn't win the World Series, but we got there!! Gotta Believe!
Love you all, WHS guys and gals, Marty Kushner
